So moving right along.
Honda no longer have the SMC, their linked system now just involves two small pads actuated by the rear brake on one of the front calipers, at least that is the case on the VFR models.
I have always avoided mentioning this due to the unwanted derision it would have previously attracted.

Going back to the OP issue, I seem to recall the front right caliper has larger outer pistons than the left, I cant find info about this but I believe it is something to do with balancing the braking effect. Obviously this is going to result in different heat build up on the front discs. Anyone got any more info about this?

You are correct.
Left Caliper Piston (B) - 22 x 35mm Outer
Right Caliper Piston (B) -27 x 35mm Outer

Center pistons (22 x 27) are the same Left & Right.

Of some interest, or not, the pistons carry a MAJ Product Code.
MAJ is the Product Code for the ST 1100 from 1994-2002 "P" Model 03
