Default Fuel tank test results.

Interesting discussion going on over at the LDR list about auxiliary fuel tank size. It seem that one of the tank makers auxiliary tanks are coming in every size but the stated. This statement just hit that air from Tom Austin the IBA's Technical Adviser.
"Based on testing I did this year, we are also going to allow 4 gallon aux cells on 2007 and newer Honda ST1300 models because my measurement of John Harrison's bike indicated that the OE tank was only 7.41
gallons, nowhere close to the 7.7 gallons advertised by Honda."

The IBA's testing can be rigorous to the point that glass beakers and thermometers get involved.
This actual test of capacity might explain why no one has been able to get near the claimed amount in their tank.
I would assume the 2003-2006 models would test the same.
So if your pumping anywhere near the 7 gallon mark in you were close to walking mode.

On two occasions I have pumped 7 / 7.1 gallons. In one case, the bike was dying and I think I pretty much coasted the last 30 feet to the pump. I feel as though I am in dire straights at 6.5 gallons.

I have pumped over 7.5 gallons. I took a picture and had a friend with me. I pushed it into th station..from the middle of the street when it conked out.
I have routinely been around 7.4 before but this was the first and only 7.5

We should keep in mind that pump calibration rules allow a certain tolerance, and pumps are calibrated at a defined temp, so what we pump according to the pump reading could be a bit off the actual quantity.
My numbers are lower probably because I fill on the side stand.

Pumping 7.5 when the bike is pushed to the pump suggests the 7.7 gallons is the new Honda Dream, it's not just a vintage bike.

Yikes... I put in 7.3X in the middle of nowhere in the Northeast Kingdom one night. That was close enough for me even while living the 7.7 dream.
